'Tis the season to waste less
As we enter the festive season and look forward to that big home-cooked Christmas meal, food waste skyrockets by around 30%. Thankfully, some planning and preparation can mean you waste less and enjoy more food this festive season.
Oh Christmas, the most wonderful (but often wasteful!) time of the year…
As we enter the festive season, we look forward to spending time with loved ones, gift-giving, a few days of rest, that big home-cooked Christmas lunch and enjoying all the festivities that come along with it. With all the flurry of activity and planning going it can be easy to overlook the important role food plays in our celebrations instead of making smart food choices that champion our fresh produce while reducing our food waste.
Research from OzHarvest shows that household food waste skyrockets by 30% around Christmas, with Aussies spending over $550 million on food alone! Thankfully, while some leftovers are inevitable, a little bit of planning and preparation can ensure you waste less and enjoy more food this festive season.
This month, we’re focussing on positive and impactful food waste avoidance behaviours. As we move closer to the Big Day, we’ll be sharing our simple tips, creative ideas, and delicious recipes to help you have a food-waste-free Christmas. Using up those tasty leftovers, whether it be creating new and unruly breakfasts with leftover Christmas ham or cooling off with leftover-fruit-platter ice blocks, is a fun and tasty way to keep good food out of landfill.
Keep a look out on our Instagram and Facebook to learn just how much money and time you can save by being smart about food this festive season. We’d also love to hear from you, our food-loving community. Share your best tips and tricks for using up produce and reducing food waste in the comments.
Since Christmas is all about giving, join us and give back to our environment by taking these small, simple steps to reduce our foodprint this summer, because, after all, #TisTheSeasonToWasteLess!
In the meantime, thanks for joining us on our food waste avoidance journey this year. Have a very merry waste-free Christmas and may the New Year bring much joy and happiness to all.
Best wishes,
Kate and the LFHW team
