Preventing food waste in businesses
If you’re in the business of food then you already know that wasting food costs you money.
If you’re in the business of food then you already know that wasting food costs you money.
With the impact of COVID-19 hitting the hospitality industry hard, cutting down on food waste is a simple way businesses can increase their bottom line and show their customers they care about the environment.
This month we’re launching an online version of our Your Business is Food program - a six-week program to help businesses reduce their food waste and improve their profits.
If you are a food business that is looking to reduce food waste, here’s just a few ways to get you started:
- Measure your food waste: Find out where it's coming from – Prep, plate, or storage to find out how to save
- Manage your stock: have a good relationship with your suppliers, only order what you need, and buy seasonal produce.
- Food storage: rotate stock and keep it stored at the correct temperature.
- Well-designed menu: understand your customers and what sells.
- Plate waste: watch portion sizes and offer side dishes as optional.
- Engage your staff: your staff are best placed to manage how food is used and help you to implement ways to save.
Also, this month we will be sharing with you some food-loving activities the whole family can take part in during the school holidays, more #SimpleSwaps to help you buy less by eating what you already have and as always, some delicious recipes to help you use up your excess produce and leftovers.
If you or one of your friends and family are in the hospitality industry, encourage them to sign up to #YourBusinessIsFood here.
